There are many reasons why I love Austin; good vibes, great weather and delicious food. It’s also clear this city knows how to let loose and throw a party from time to time (I mean, there is literally a festival happening every other weekend). So I decided to compile some fun ideas together to help make your Cinco De Mayo fiesta (which is less than a week away!) extra spicy. Being from the PNW, there isn’t as much of a mexican presence like in Texas, so I fully embrace the holiday spirit, piñatas and all.
Decor: This is everything when it comes to a party. Unfortunately, it can also be very expensive and time consuming. Stick to decorating a specific area if you are on a budget i.e. the food and drink table, because that’s where people will be most ;) These cactus cupcake holders fulfill function and decor – perfect!
Food: Probably the main thing guests care about, other than the drink selection. There is nothing worse than showing up to a party to see only a half scoop of guac left in the bowl. Spare your guests from getting hangry and make individual servings like these seven layer dips, to prevent that one person, we all know, who takes enough to feed a family of four.
Drinks: Cinco De Mayo is not Cinco De Mayo without, you guessed it, alcohol! Gosh, who doesn’t love a party where you’re encouraged to hit cardboard for candy while under the influence? Get innovative with drink ideas – make it an activity for guests to create their own! Sip on these blood orange margaritas I whipped up for National Margarita Day, they are delicious! But don’t drink and drive, people. Got leftover lime wedges? Jello shots are probably a good idea.
Attire: I’ve really been into embroidered tops lately so Cinco De Mayo comes at no better time to play a little dress up. If you live in Austin, check out Fiesta Mart to find authentic mexican shirts dresses. I could actually wear these year round.
These flower crowns are the ideal accessory for this colorful occasion. If you haven’t made one yet, check out this quick tutorial. And if you actually don’t know why Cinco De Mayo is a holiday (guilty <insert embarrassed face>), read up. Ay ay ay!
Happy Sunday Fun Day! This weekend was full of family, friends and a lot of sunshine; pretty much all you need in life. Unfortunately, we all miscalculated how much sunscreen was needed for a full day on the lake, and now we’re REALLY paying for it, whoops. But all this time outdoors is really getting me into the summer spirit – pretty soon Barton Springs Pool will be the only Austin destination when temperatures break the high 90’s and SnoBeach will be backed up with Tiger’s Blood orders. So naturally, Peter and I decided to plan a little getaway to Miami to soak up the sun kissed beaches and cuban inspired cuisine. I’m pretty much just trying to live vicariously through every Slim Aaron’s summer holiday photo.
First off, if anyone has ever been to Miami, any tips/suggestions are more than welcomed! We plan on amping up our food game with top notch cuban sandwiches, exploring the 60’s MOD architecture of downtown Miami and finally driving the overseas highway to Key West with Sixt Rent a Car. If you plan on taking a road trip anytime soon, look no further, as this family owned and operated rental car company comes highly recommended! They set the bar high with more than 100 locations worldwide (including our very own Austin, TX!), flexible drop off/pick up locations (which we all know is key) and really great rates. The choice rides are just an added bonus, but here are some coupons to sweeten the deal. Road trip!
In other news, here are a few things I’m currently obsessing over:
How cute are these handmade headbands by Libellula Designs?! Presh.
I’m a big fan of long lasting lipstick and think I just found my new number #1.
I did a little sunday shopping today at Olive on the eastside, it’s a must see!
If you love truffles, Bola Pizza will blow your mind! I had a little taste at the EAUFT and still can’t get enough.
First off, Happy Earth Day, friends! Today is all about giving back to Mother Nature and I’m really getting into the spirit. Secondly, sorry for my absence the past few days, it’s been very busy in my little treehouse, which only means exciting things are coming – so stay tuned!
I’m super excited about today because ever since I attended the East Austin Urban Farm Tour last weekend, I’ve had gardening on my mind. In fact, over the past week, I’ve visited the garden department at Home Depot three times – literally love the place! I found these marigold beauties on sale, so I had to pick some up to start my spring garden (you know you’re getting older when this kind of this excites you, eek!). I also just so happened to have this little rusted over cruiser bike (which is now out of comish), with a wicker basket and knew it was the perfect resting place for these fresh florals. You may not have an extra bike laying around, but there are plenty of other options to get your garden started.
Herb garden and veggies are up next! What are you up to on Earth Day?
All hail EAUFT. My mouth is still salivating from this past weekend where I was wined and dined at the East Austin Urban Farm Tour. Think, Austin Food and Wine Festival, but no lines, half the cost and you can actually see where your food comes from. This self guided tour takes you through four neighboring farms in East Austin where you are literally filled with farm fresh ingredients made by some of the most elite restaurants in Austin (Lenoir, Uchi and Eden East to name a few). Check out the full line up here. It was pretty much a perfect Sunday Fun Day.
